Welcome to my first post! Excited to be here to share thoughts, findings, ideas and models for improving scientific research, to promote important work in this space, and to learn from others on the platform interested in similar topics. Connect here.
Advocacy for an Improved Research Enterprise
I am a former bench scientist who transitioned into policy and advocacy to support an improved scientific research enterprise through a number of roles with universities, non-profits and scientific societies. These have ranged from writing articles and blogs on research policy, to advocating for change within the academic research enterprise and with the U.S. Congress, and to a Congressional role providing another platform to make change. This would qualify as “policy for science” focused on ensuring that the research enterprise is sustainable for future generations, while making sure that the voices of early career scientists are heard in making this change. One main goal is to develop a robust STEM research workforce and to enable early career trainees to contribute to innovative scientific discoveries that can advance our nation forward. This is also a call to action for Congress, agencies, universities and other stakeholders to come together in supporting STEM talent from all backgrounds and ensuring that we are creating the best environment for them to thrive and succeed in science.
Platform Posting
I frequently post on a number of platforms and my writing is aggregated at this site. I post about research policy, policy for science, STEM education and workforce development, and supporting the future of STEM through a number of systemic reforms in academia. I also post on Twitter, BlueSky, LinkedIn and Instagram. I intend to keep my Substack free to be able to share valuable content without barriers. I invite everyone to contribute to developing and advocating for the research system we need to see in order for the future of STEM to thrive. On my website you can learn more about my background and work in this space. I look forward to creating a community around these principles and learning from others. Subscribe below to keep in touch and collaborate. Always happy to talk about policy changes needed to improve the research enterprise and how we can work together to make change.
